Atlantic City's Darker Side

by DMcAlvanah_Citysearch at Citysearch

While high-rollers flock to places like Caesars and the Taj Mahal, the Sands attracts an altogether different sort of gambler...it's a dark, foreboding kind of place where the tour buses pull right up to the front door. Inside, it's darker, smokier than most casinos. But for good blackjack players who don't mind the less-then-flashy atmosphere, the Sands can be worth it--table minimums are low and the house often offers insurance.

This Place is a DUMP - Beware!

by daynor at Citysearch

The Sands hotel is a dump. If you read this and still decide to stay there - you have no excuse, you've been warned. Where shall I begin? You make a reservation for a certain type of room. You get there and that type of room you requested has NOT been reserved for you...apparently its just a "preference" that you HOPE they can accomodate. So I ended up with a regular full size bed for a 6'6' tall person, when I had requested a king. The room that we got was in the "Madison House" which is actually a separate building from the Sands but connected by a walkway, which is irrelevant because both buildings were equally dirty. The halls and other common areas are smoke-filled and all of the carpeting is matted and stained. The rooms look NOTHING LIKE the photos and are incredibly outdated.

Bottom line, the Sands should not be in the price range that it is in. Yes, the location is great, but the amenities are like those you would find a cheap MOtel, mystery stains on the couch and all...

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Kitchy side of AC - do not fear!

by foursquarebar at Citysearch

I don't even gamble, but my spouse does, and the Sands is liberal about giving out free rooms if you use your card. We like the new bar with Mojitoes in the machines, Sinatra-themed drinks, and friendly bartenders who throw bottles around stylishly. Somehow I find this place very old-AC and comfy. We come for many a Thursday night. I wish the Sands would spruce up its restaurants, but it is still a great location and a fabulous deal especially if the room is free. The Boardwalk Buffet is actually pretty damn good too. Staff is always super nice everywhere!

  • Pros: Old-AC, Channel Sinatra, Copa Room
  • Cons: Smoky, Old-AC, Non-glitzy
